I agree on this being a good summer to stay home. We had a few trips planned, and we decided against them about February due to the extreme danger of this virus.
RVing may be a way out if you can pack enough food and water. May then only need fuel stops. Generally there is plenty of free camping all over the West: BLM Land. If there is BLM Land where you want to go in CO. maybe you could still make the trip. 3 months of freeze dried food does not take much space. It is if there is space for water.
We’ve always stayed on BLM land when RV camping out West. Backpacking can be near anywhere on Federal land as long as there are no open fires, and any and all stoves used properly.
The end is not in sight. My institution is dreading the prospect of having to teach online again in the fall—which may have disastrous effects on enrollment.
Hope you get good news from Gallup!

We’re not really set up for an extended BLM trip. Alas, we moderns are addicted to plumbing and refrigeration.
I’d like to try it someday. I’ve driven or hiked by some dazzling BLM sites, and there certainly are fewer people.
