    Nicely put. I’ve been fortunate to have that feeling of being a lonely part of a minority a few times in my life—as a visitor at Gallaudet University, a college for (and by) the Deaf; overseas where English is not understood—and it’s tranformatively educational in the way it changes how you understand your own identity. Kudos to you for being open to that feeling. Safe travels.

    Most of my students are African American, Haitian, Jamaican, and Latino. I was raised is white suburbs. I, too, count myself as lucky. Diversity isn’t just a concept; it enriches experience. Growing up, I saw Indians only on television. I’m always learning.
