“It’s Your Write”: Writing and Typewriter Event at Broward College North Regional Library

There’s plenty to do this spring. This year’s wRites of Spring Literary Festival, organized by yours truly, will host visiting author Nicole Dennis-Benn, whose novels, Here Comes the Sun and Patsy, explore how Jamaican culture intersects with issues of class, color, gender, and sexuality. The title of the festival is “A Woman’s Voice: Class, Color, and Culture.” All events take place at Broward College’s North Regional Library from March 24-26. I don’t know if anyone in South Florida follows my blog, but I’ll post the itinerary when it’s published. I’ll have some typewriters in the library courtyard from 1-3pm on the 24th. They always draw attention from students and the public.

Tomorrow the library is hosting its own event: “Tell Your Story II: It’s Your Write.” I’ll be presenting on Irish literature for its summer program. More importantly, I and a colleague’s typewriters have been solicited for tomorrow.

For that purpose I have put together some simple writing prompts for the typewriter tables. I’ll display some books, too.

Who knows? Maybe someone will type a time-travel story for Cold Hard Type? That, of course, is the other big mission for March. Submissions for book three, Backspaces, are due by March 15th. Luckily spring break has just started. I need to finish my story before I put on my editorial hat.

Photos of tomorrow’s shenanigans will be posted when they are fresh off the press.

P.S. I’m bringing an Olivetti Studio 44, SC Super Silent, SC Sterling, Royalite, and, for me, an Optima Elite 3. (No one is allowed to touch the latter. 👮‍♂️) I think my colleague has some Olympias in transit.

  1. This looks like great fun. And I might have to “borrow” your writing prompt ideas.

I hope they drum up interest. You know how it goes. You want people to take the typewriter seriously rather than see it as a novelty.

A great event. I hope you get a lot of typewriter test driving.
I like your writing prompts. Like Joe, I need to borrow them for our events.
