Writing a Writer’s Manual is Fun.

on

I’ve been putting some more work into my online writing manual. It’s fun to buck the textbook industry. I and colleagues are occasionally solicited to put together textbooks for major publishers. Solicitors knock on the office door and pitch what pittance you would make in the process. The glamour of seeing your name on a textbook! Then new editions, with minor revisions, are rolled out every couple of years. Students pay the price—directly or through student loans. If they don’t have to pay, the taxpayer foots the bill.

There’s far too much distrust of academics these days, but feel free to suspect the textbook and technology companies that weasel their way into schools with repackaged bling.

Nice to see it shaping up!

Is re-using one’s own paper that was written for another class really plagiarism? I can think of valid pedagogical reasons for not allowing it, but that it might be considered plagiarism is news to me. (I think I may have been guilty of it at some point). How does it fit under the mantle of “presenting the ideas and words of someone else as if they are your own”?

Thanks for the help, John. You’re right. I normally call that an non-effort for a given class. I’ll have to move that down. Thanks for the help with item G, too.
