    Congratulations on the fine bow.
I started out with an Eddie Bauer 35# recurve way back in the old days. Well, it was my second bow. My first was a shorter 20#. I got a few deer with the 35#. These days no one wants to use a recurve. They want fancy and all kinds of bells & whistles. I shot both recurve and compound. I still prefer the recurve.
Next you’ll be fletching and pointing your own arrows.

I had a feeling that you would be a source of valuable information, Bill. Do you feather and point your arrows? Next I’ll have to pick up a bale of hay. Buying new targets could get expensive.

P.S. You must have excellent aim to have bagged a deer. So far I’m not sure I have the courage to kill my own meat.

Just watched some videos on fletching. That’s not bad at all.

All it takes to hit the target is practice, practice, and more practice. My entire family did archery. Mom and my sisters never went hunting. Mom quit shooting when she hit 80. My little brother has been shooting in semi-pro and pro competition for the past 3 years or so.

Fletching is not all that difficult. You can buy jigs or make them. Feathers all get set from the notch position. Pointing is not too difficult until you get into broad heads or fishing heads. Balancing (linearly) can be tedious. My brother even does rotational balance somehow.

Well, if I progress in this new hobby, I’m sure I’ll have some questions for you. From what I hear, there’s a good archery range in Gallup. I’m looking forward to that.

Just curious, Bill, what kind of arrows do you use—and what do you use for fletching? My feathers are looking worn already.

I loved archery during the short spells I participated at ages 13 and 20. It was just the right combination of muscle skills and coordination. I’m pretty rotten at most sports, but good at marksmanship, whether bow or bullet. Or I was, at least.

Never had an urge to shoot at anything animate, though. Enjoy your new sport! And read John Keegan about the longbowmen at Agincourt—the shock and awe troops of their day. Yikes!

Thanks for the recommendation, John. I am enjoying the bow. It really focuses the mind. Quite gratifying.
