Nothing restores the stars—and one’s own thoughts—quite like the sudden bankruptcy of the electrical grid.

We used to get several days during and after winter storms in VA where there was no electric. I enjoyed the quiet, no light pollution, and camping in the house.

No electricity is an experience we can make enjoyable in many ways, and many people miss those ways, unfortunately.

I cheated though in FL. I had a large battery and D.C to A.C. converter to run a fan all night so we could at least have a breeze for sleeping. I used solar cells to recharge the battery during the day.

I’ll fess up. I had my Jackery nearby. I didn’t need it, but it ensured that my phone wouldn’t die. Also, I watched Darkest Hour on my laptop. I felt like I was living under London.

Aaaah that was great. Those are romantic times when civilization retreats. And why I love living in my little camper where I can see the stars watching over me as I fall asleep.

I’ve noticed a lot of small campers on the road. It must be great not having to set up camp or worry too much about the elements–or about bears, which are appearing more in my area. One man was killed about an hour away from me. It happened in Navajo Nation. What makes it surprising is that the bear raided his home in the early afternoon.
