As I absorbed coffee this morning, I drafted these rules for writing short fiction. My students’ last paper assignment involves writing short stories. Writers find all sorts of good reasons for breaking rules, but rules do form important guidelines for new writers. Writing is a lot like playing music: You have to learn the note before you can bend it.

Cool. It has its limits, but it is fun to think about a story as the creation of a virtual game.

Many a great story has come from a game. Dungeons and Dragons has spawned many a tale.
Speaking of short stories, Cold Hard Type is coming along. Working with dialog and I’m terrible at it. Right now it’s a lot of random thoughts typed out in draft for revision. Oddly enough, we are following a similar path in our tales. So much so that I have in a sense stolen your character as a player in mine. Not to worry, though, No plagiarism, just reference. Stole a couple of JVC’s ideas as well.

It would be really interesting if texts cross-referenced. You have my curiosity. Dialogue is its own form. I show Hemingway’s “Hills like White Elephants” in class.
Played D&D back in the day. I didn’t realize that it was a form of storytelling/writing back then.
