    As my neighbor put it, “There aren’t enough educated people in this country for us to count on the educated vote.” A successful politician in a democracy must by definition be something of a demagogue. What’s disturbing is how far so many people are willing to go to delude themselves—to accept claims that they must know, on some level, are lies. I think the effort of self-deception just intensifies the passion and the rage. Fasten your seatbelts.

      And they can keep it going. Whatever that is good about the economy right now will be attributed to Trump. If the economy tanks in two years, they’ll blame it on Biden.

  2. this anxiety (well-diagnosed above) is shared all over the world. This will have a huge influence on us, from geopolitics down to the little idiots who’ll feel emboldened to be racist, sexist, ignorant at will. Strange times.
