Good question. It was in the case with the carriage lock set. The case was wrapped in bubble wrap. Everything seemed fine. I suspect these issues existed before shipment. I did get a good deal on it ($139, which is cheap for an Erika). Luckily I’ve been able to correct issues.
It’s a puzzle, but I’m beginning to wonder if the two-space backspace is part of the design. If I press it halfway, it goes back one space. Press it all the way, two spaces. Have you ever heard of such a feature?
I wonder why the problems? Was this beautiful typewriter insufficiently packed for shipping?

I’m glad you were able to correct the issue. Sometimes I don’t understand how a typewriter could get messed up as it evidently has been.
