Typewriter Tattoo Courtesy of My Niece

on

I’m visiting family for a couple of days. My niece, with whom I’ve always shared creative interests, offered to give me a tattoo for my right bicep. I remember her early days. She had and has an independent spirit. We would work on art and build Lego structures all day long. Legos became a tradition, as she had inherited all of my childhood Legos. It is for this reason that she wanted to merge a Lego aesthetic with a typewriter. She had only a day to dream up a blueprint. I sent her photos of various machines. I wanted it to be one my special machines, something I repeatedly use. Well, that would have to be my Olympia SG1.

Initially, before she had the image from which to work, she had drafted something a bit computer-like. She is twenty-one. Typewriters aren’t an everyday experience for her.

Then, after we talked a bit, she came up with an image that captures the SG1’s personality. The typewriter keys represent Lego pieces. With that in mind, I suggested that “Logos” be etched into the page inserted into the machine.

“Logos” means many things. For me, it is a philosophical term signifying rational discourse, but it also suggests creation of the word. She is going to give herself another Lego image. I think that’s the coolest damn thing,

That is wicked cool. I like the look and the originality of the idea.

Now you have a logo of your own and a permanent reminder of your sister and time you spent together. Tattoos are quite magical and can pull deep thoughts at the oddest times. They are also like typewriters – you will never be satisfied with just one.

Well said, Michael. This is my first tattoo with color. I have three others, which are pretty understated. Still, it is tempting to think of more!

    Nice tattoo.
Be careful thought. Like Michael writes tattoos are like typewriters they keep multiplying on their own and soon you may be covered in hundreds if typewriter tattoos.

So true. The Typosphere must visit her studio or she could tour the USA and visit all the type-Ins. She does great work.

I had considered a more antique machine before, but the SG1 seemed most honest.
